One thing I believe in is “sleeping in” in the morning. That has different meanings to different folks. What I mean is waking up around 9 to 10 o’clock. One morning really early at sunrise late in February, I was awakened by a loud honking noise. I looked outside my window toward the farmer’s field next door and I saw a billion geese. I know that I typically exaggerate, but it really was a billion!
They were wandering around the field of last season’s corn cuttings announcing to the world that they had arrived. It was a surprise for I didn’t know if they were coming or going for the winter. However, there they were just hanging out.
I jumped to my feet and threw on my jeans, coat, shoes, and grabbed my camera. I knew if I did not hurry out, I would miss the shots of a life time.
I walked quietly into the field and proceeded to get as close to the geese as I could, hoping they wouldn’t notice me and fly away. There were a ton of them.
I shot a few dozen pictures. I love digital cameras because it doesn’t cost any money for film and developing. You can shoot as many pictures as you want or can.
I stopped for a moment to take a look at how the pictures were turning out, and to my horror, a screen message informed me “Hey stupid, there is no SD card in the camera!”. S**t. Swearing under my breath to not scare the geese, I snuck back home and retrieve the very essential SD card all the while hoping the geese would stay. Then, I repeated my sneak maneuver that I had now become expert at.
Not being satisfied at how close I was, I slowly inched closer. Luck was with me. I didn’t upset them at all. They didn’t seem to care that I was shooting them.
Once I got my fill of picture shooting, I wanted to do a little more research about the geese, and Googled them. I happened to read a warning that mentioned it was a good idea not to get too close a flock of geese for they can be dangerous and attack you. I guess I got lucky twice that day.
